Volunteer of the Month
Award - Jan Welch
Gov. Lynch and the Executive Council recently presented Jan Welch with a commendation at a ceremony in the State House. Gov. Lynch partnered with VolunteerNH! to create the New Hampshire Volunteer of the Month awards. The honorees are selected on a rotating basis by Executive Council district by VolunteerNH!. “Volunteerism is the backbone of the Granite State’s strong sense of community, and fosters the high quality of life of which we are so proud. As Governor, I believe by recognizing these efforts, we can encourage more people to get involved and to help preserve that tradition of civic engagement that makes New Hampshire so special,” Gov. Lynch said. Welch was chosen Volunteer of the Month in recognition of her dedication to the Squam Lake Natural Science Center. She has contributed more than 400 hours to the center over the past six years, showing an exceptional level of commitment by caring for the animals and maintaining trails and gardens. In addition to Jan's work with the Squam Lake Natural Science Center, she also works for Belknap County Conservation District (BCCD) as a Project Assistant. Jan has also excelled in her roles at the District in working on projects with youth and others. In her current role, she assists with the management of the Opechee tract of land which is managed by BCCD. She also plays a part in educating the youth participants in the GED program with their public service component as well as those youth who must perform court appointed service. Throughout the summer, she works with these students at the Gunstock facility on various conservation projects like the upkeep of the wetland walk and installing native plants. Jan Welch was very deserving of the June Volunteer of the Month award not only for her work with the Squam Lake Science Center, but for her work with BCCD as an employee.
